BCCS Receives OWH Grant to Coordinate Programming for Sex Workers ![]()
Brandywine Counseling & Community Services (BCCS) has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Women’s Health (OWH), under the national Coalition for a Healthier Community (CHC) initiative, to offer programming to women involved in prostitution in Wilmington, Delaware and surrounding New Castle County. The grant award of $300,000 a year over a five year period follows a year of research and program design that was also funded by OWH.

Delaware issued an emergency order on Friday, September 30, 2011 banning drugs known as “bath salts,” powerful stimulants that can mimic the effects of cocaine, LSD or methamphetamines.

Brandywine Counseling & Community Services (BCCS) has cemented its reputation as Delaware’s leading voice of alcohol and drug prevention, having been awarded two grants totaling $600,000 a year for three years, to create two statewide campaigns designed to prevent alcohol and drug abuse before any sign of a problem occur. The grants were awarded from the Delaware Division of Health & Social Services, Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health.

Brandywine Counseling & Community Services, Inc. (BCCS) was recognized with the Bronze Award at the 2011 National Service Industry Advertising Awards (SIAA), the only advertising awards that specifically recognize achievements of the service industry. Of the 1,000 institutions and 400 advertising agencies that submitted entries, the “Say NO To That Shot” billboard, part of a prevention campaign on fetal alcohol syndrome, was honored in the Outdoor/Transit category.

Drugs have taken over their lives and they have no hope and they have no life and any dreams or self-esteem that they have is all shot. But deep down inside, all those women are some good women. “We are delighted to be recognized for our collaborative approach to the issue of prostitution in Delaware,” said Dr. Lynn Fahey, CEO of BCCS. “These women are in need of both medical and social services but are often trapped in the criminal justice system with limited access. By aligning a network of representatives from all three systems, we can improve the health and welfare of female sex workers, and reduce the cycling rate in the court system of women with criminal charges linked to prostitution. This project is going to save Delaware taxpayers significant sums of money.”
